Würzburg forest researchers come to a surprising result: The death of trees due to climate change is causing biodiversity to flourish. But only under certain conditions.

Scientists at the University of Würzburg have come to this conclusion. They examined around 500 pieces of forest in Germany and counted which animals and plants live in which habitats.

The ecologists used modern laser technology to scan mixed forests, monocultures and fallow land with diseased trees. In this way, the researchers were able for the first time to determine the life of many groups of species from the realm of animals, plants and fungi – including bats, birds, arthropods, fungi and lichens, which represent a total of 2,600 species.
The surprising result of the field recordings: A change in dense forest and gaps increases the diversity in most species groups, the researchers write in the journal « Nature Ecology & Evolution ».

Animal ecologist Jörg Müller led the research project, in which several universities were involved and which was funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). He says: « This means that the forest damage that is currently often complained about in the course of global climate change with dying groups of trees in dense forests appears in a new light. »
However, a condition for greater biodiversity is that enough closed forests survive to provide a habitat for mosses and mushrooms.
